Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation (CAAF) supported the State Audit Office of Viet Nam in training interviewing skills for state auditors

Within the framework of the working program of the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation (CAAF) with the State Audit Office of Viet Nam (SAV) on capacity building in the field of performance audit, in the morning of March 15, 2022, in Ha Noi, CAAF opened a training course on interviewing skills for state Auditors in the field of performance audit.

Overview of the training course

The training course was designed for 28 participants, the majority of whom are auditors of SAV’s and four of whom are auditors of the State Audit Office of Lao PDR.
The course’s trainers - Mr. Frank Byrnes and Ms. Linda Klassen - are experienced CAAF experts in the field of training and coaching on interviewing and networking skills. Participants in the course would be trained with required knowledge and skills to conduct effective interviews during performance audits.
 
The main objective of the course was to provide participants with the followings: (i) methods to establish beliefs and relationships with verbal, nonverbal behavior; (ii) understanding how to use nonverbal behavior to openly manage the auditees’ state; (iii) understanding of different viewpoints; (iv) practice of listening, observing, and responding to nonverbal cues and showing empathy.

During the 3-day period, from March 15 to March 17, 2023, participants would be introduced to the following topics: (i) Human connection - perspective on communication, trust, understanding and positive listening; (ii) Maintenance of composure and forecast management; understanding people; (iii) Improvement in the interview process – note taking; (iv) Interview; detection of fraud and potential threats; negotiation skills, specific strategies for asking tough questions and delivering bad news. Participants would also take part in practical role-playing exercises and participate in the end-of-course assessment.

On March 15, 2023, before learning specific contents, the trainees took self-assessment questions, focusing on the assessment of strengths in the field of interviewing, asking questions and areas of expertise; the ability to build relationships and trust; the ability to convince; the ability to plan and prepare, take notes; virtual interviewing skills; skills in managing head-to-head interviews, ect., thereby, assessing main challenges, strengths, expectations to be achieved in the course and giving suggestions for lecturers./.
